Blood Angels were the ninth Legion to be formed from the original twenty Space Marine Legions created by the Emperor. They proudly served under their Primarch, Sanguinius, before his death, and are particularly well known for their bloodthirsty nature in battle. Being one of the oldest and most long-lived chapters, the Sons of Sanguinius have developed their own refined aesthetic that differs from the standard Marine appearance.
The Blood Angel geed-seed is still capable of producing all nineteen organ implants required for the transformation of a normal man into a Space Marine. It also has a unique quirk of vastly extending the lifespan of the Space Marines in its gene-line, allowing Marines to live for more than a millennium. Though this geed-seed appears to therefore be superior it has a hidden, dreadful flaw, making the battle-brothers of the Blood Angels susceptible to the Black Rage and the Red Thirst.
The Black Rage occurs when a Blood Angel succumbs to the psychic imprint left by Sanguinius's death and is driven into insanity. The second genetic flaw, the Red Thirst, causes warriors to suffer an unnatural bloodlust, instilling them with a savage thirst for the blood of their enemies. To allow battle-brothers now affected by these genetic flaws to continue their service they are formed into a unique unit known as the Death Company.
